The two biggest jobs entrepreneurs have are
Without these two things, businesses do not grow.
We build relationships all the time. We have family and friend relationships. And then we have working relationships. A lot of times we have some sort of built-in leverage with the relationships I just mentioned…family ties and/or authority. So when we are not getting our point across or not getting our way, we can always play the Mother Card or the Boss Card to get compliance. Notice I said compliance, not commitment.
Commitment is where we would like to be in all of our relationships. Take the time to get commitment in our personal relationships instead of resorting to the “Cards” in our deck.
The terrain of building relationships with complete strangers, our potential customers. This is where commitment is a must. There is no leverage. It’s like influencing independent contractors or peers at work who don’t report to you. No “Cards” to be had!
The biggest misconception I see entrepreneurs have is that their product will “sell itself”. I don’t need to sell; my product will do that for me. There are even companies that actually tell their representatives that they do not have to sell…just give it away, people will buy!
If public speaking is people’s #1 fear, Sales is #2.
And, sales is not the problem. It is the mindset around sales. Sales makes this world go round. No sales, no economy. It isn’t sales itself, it’s what sales has come to represent in our society. I have heard countless times from my clients (and myself), “I don’t want to be one of those pushy salespeople”, “I don’t want to manipulate people”.
Then don’t be pushy. And, people, we manipulate people and things in our environment all the time! Manipulate is another one of those words that has a negative connotation in society. The word itself is not negative; it’s what we have come to accept as negative.
So be the kind of salesperson YOU want to be!
